We’ll meet at Core Gallery where you will have the opportunity to view Andrea’s lichen inspired Symbiotica art exhibit. Andrea and Katherine will demonstrate a few nature journaling tips and spend a short time looking at lichen samples, learning what makes them unique. We will then venture forth in search of lichen on city sidewalks, buildings, rocks, and trees. We’ll observe and notate their color and shapes in our sketchpads and create our own mini field guides and lichen color palettes. Symbiotica: Microcosm of Beauty Living in Community Solo Art Exhibition.
Category: Show/Exhibit
Venue:
117 CORE Gallery, Prefontaine Place South, Seattle, WA, USA
Reception: 5 Sep 2024
Opening Reception Thursday September 5, 5-8PM.
Symbiotica: Microcosm of Beauty Thriving Through Community.
Andrea's Intaglio print series title Symbiotica refers to the symbiotic relationship between algae and fungus which form lichen. Symbiotica is a metaphor for community and creating relationships for a better world. One has to look carefully to find lichen on the forest floor, sidewalks, rocks, an old building, city railing, or bark on a twig in the park. When Andrea moved from the water’s edge to a woodland studio, she became intrigued by the microcosmic world of lichen. A fascination with the beauty in overlooked spaces and by extension, her fellow human beings, inspired Andrea’s new experimental mixed media etchings.
As part of the exhibit, I will be handing out Seeds of Peace sculptures. Come see what it's about!

A collision of Visual Art, Dance and Theatre in Port Townsend! Come see the creative threads come to life!
The Artist Colab was launched at Key City Public Theatre in 2019. Designed to encourage unique collaborations between artists and art forms, the Colab annually culminates in public presentations at Key City Playhouse. This initiative in is alignment with KCPT’s core value of nurturing new artwork creation by generative artists. The results are performances that transcend form, expanding KCPT’s reach to new audiences and artists. Participation is through invitation by KCPT’s Artistic Director and extended to notable artists from our community whose work is not primarily theatrical, in the sense of telling a specific story via actors. Each invited artist is given a month long residency and is required to identify and include at least one artistic collaborator whose work is in a different art form. The Artist Colab provides valuable resources and opportunity so that individuals may engage in artistic risk taking, explore new methods and mediums, and foster dynamic creativity between collaborators.

Find more of Andrea's mini Seed Song paintings, and follow Visions in Motion 2020 on https://www.gofundme.com/f/visions-in-motion-2020?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet .Abstract monoprints by Jeannie McMacken, along with fresh poetry by Holly J. Curated by Jeannie McMacken: “I wanted to examine what different creatives saw when they examined nature,†McMacken explained. “Each artist in this show works in a different medium and brings her unique perspective to the theme. We all see something different and we express that moment in our own way, using our own tools. The resulting synergy among the pieces is thought-provoking and dynamic.â€
McMacken insisted that the written word be included as part of the show.
“Poetry imparts an additional dimension to the exhibit that works well with the visual statements. Holly J. Hughes’ haiku and verse, some inspired by the show’s work, enhances the art and encourages one to meditate deeper on a thought.â€
Andrea's Seed Song painting sales will support upcoming Visions in Motion 2020 Project. Check out: gofundme.com/f/visions-in-motion-2020.
McMacken said a portion of the sale of her work will be donated to a local environmental non-profit.

Reception with the artists and The Jenny Davis Jazz Quartet on the Plaza. Andrea K. Lawson, Women’s March 36 x 48â€, oil on canvas; Throughout history Protest, in its various forms, has been a tool for
expressing opinions, thoughts, and disagreements relating to specific
events or policies of governments or societal groups.
The great protests of the 1960s are distant memories for some and
badges of honor for others, but the twenty-first century has produced
a climate that calls up voices to be heard once again. In this regard,
artists and other free-thinking individuals can lead movements and offer
their influence to enact change in peaceful but highly visible ways:
through their music, verse, and art.
Presented on these gallery walls are powerful pieces addressing historical
social issues that remain unresolved, and are too often quickly forgotten by
the larger society. They offer a stark reminder that while progress is
often the province of the activist, in one way or another, at one time
or another, we are all called upon to be activists in our own world.

MIndscape: Featured in the exhibition is Lawson’s new Brain Beauty series inspired by images of the human brain at the microscopic level.
Andrea was recently awarded a public art commission for the Sno-Isles libraries, Camano Island Library Reading Room located in our neighboring poetic farmland of Island County, Washington. The call for a science related artwork spurred her research and interest in the varied forms of our own bodies.
Andrea’s acrylic painting Brain Beauty l is the smaller version of Andrea’s Brain Beauty, Beauty Brain public art Installation. Merging art and science, Andrea has rendered her concept of brain functions, with colorful abstract gestures across nine painted panels, each representing different parts of the brain seen at different levels of magnification. At first glance the paintings look abstract expressionist, but are actually specific images of brain functions such as the neocortex, the retina, the Hippocampus, neurons and glial cells.
Advances in Scientific research and methods of imaging have gathered new visual information about the brain which controls our cognitive processes, our physical movements and even our memories. Both the organ, and the learning process itself, give us the ability to think at a high level and to create, functions which distinguish us as human beings. Andrea sees her paintings of the visual manifestation of these microscopic spaces as metaphors for intellectual metaphysical ideas as well as visual forms evolving from contemporary art history.
Seascape: Her vibrant seascapes evoking northwest landscape, water and light will also be on display. These intimate works were Inspired by local views of the Olympic Peninsula’s bays, oceans and skies. While sometimes including tiny details depicting human presence, she also captures wild sometimes abstract layers of color and light evoking the energy of nature and weather.
Andrea paints in her studio overlooking the Port Townsend Bay. She is the recipient of many awards including King County Arts Commission, The Cape Cod Art Association and the Port Townsend Arts Commission. Andrea has taught art for many years in a variety of settings including the Seattle Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Peninsula College. She received her MFA from Parsons New School of Design New York City.
Please join the artist at the Port Townsend First Saturday Gallery Walk, November 5 from 5:30-8 P.M.
